Leonardo looks to Rheinmetall for an alliance on tanks

ROME (Reuters) – Leonardo is in talks with Germany’s Rheinmetall to form a strategic alliance on tanks.

This was reported by a source close to the discussions, effectively confirming an article in La Repubblica, according to which Leonardo is looking at Rheinmetall after negotiations with the Franco-German consortium Kmw+Nexter Defense Systems (Knds) failed.

Yesterday, Leonardo announced the end of negotiations with KNDS for the tank alliance, stressing that it will remain committed to developing the new generation of armored platforms for the Italian army, the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), “through cooperation. other qualified partners”.

Rheinmetall has not commented on the matter.

Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani said in November that the group wanted to focus on European alliances and create regional giants.
